Working with Upgrade Advisor

To ensure that your upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is successful, Upgrade Advisor provides a central console to identify issues to address in your SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and SQL Server 2008 installations before upgrading to SQL Server 2008 R2.

You can use Upgrade Advisor to perform the following tasks:

  • Analyze SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and SQL Server 2008 components on local or remote servers.

    Important

You cannot analyze remote instances of Reporting Services.

  • View the results from the analysis.

Upgrade Advisor includes an analyzer and a viewer. The Upgrade Advisor Analysis Wizard analyzes the components you choose. The analyzer then generates custom reports about issues that you must handle before you can upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2. You use the Upgrade Advisor Report Viewer to view the custom reports. For more information about what Upgrade Advisor analysis detects, see Resolving Upgrade Issues.

The topics in this section provide an overview of Upgrade Advisor functionality, information about how to use Upgrade Advisor, and how to use Upgrade Advisor reports.
