Enterprise Management

Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) 2010 Enterprise Edition supports the following functionality, which is not available in Forefront TMG Standard Edition:

  • Can be deployed in multiple-server arrays for better scalability, performance, fault tolerance, and centralized management.
  • Can use the Cache Array Routing Protocol (CARP) to efficiently balance the load of storing and retrieving cached information in an array containing multiple Forefront TMG servers.
  • Provides integration with Network Load Balancing (NLB) for configuring Network Load Balancing clusters within Forefront TMG.
  • Supports two levels of configuration management. For example, an array policy is applied to all the servers in an entire array, and an enterprise policy can be applied to one or more arrays in the organization.
  • Has no restriction on the number of processors on the Forefront TMG server.

Multiple servers running Forefront TMG Enterprise Edition can be joined to the same array. In this case, one of the servers is designated as the array manager, from which the array-level configuration settings of the other array members are updated.

When an Enterprise Management Server (EMS) is deployed, multiple enterprise arrays can be created within a single enterprise. The EMS stores both enterprise-level and array-level configuration settings and centrally manages all the arrays in the enterprise. In this case, each array member obtains the enterprise configuration settings and the array configuration settings for its array from the central EMS and maintains a locally stored effective configuration that is derived from the enterprise and array configurations.

Some objects, properties, methods, and enumerated types are available only when enterprise management is enabled. The reference sections make note of each item that is available only when enterprise management is enabled. Lists of these coding elements are provided in Forefront TMG Administration in Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.
