Global Software Management

Open Software Associates

Open Software Associates Inc. is providing NETDEPLOY GLOBAL, a suite of software and services based on the Active Directoryâ„¢ service in Microsoft® Windows® 2000 that provides full lifecycle software management for the enterprise. NETDEPLOY GLOBAL broadens the software management capabilities of Windows 2000 to include legacy platforms other than Microsoft operating systems, and extends their reach to provide global software management for remote offices, mobile workers, and the extended enterprise supply chain. Because NETDEPLOY GLOBAL operates securely through corporate firewalls, it extends the centrally managed software environment to remote offices on independent networks, to mobile workers who connect intermittently or over unreliable lines, and to partner businesses (suppliers and customers) who make up the extended enterprise. Patented SmartPullT technology within NETDEPLOY GLOBAL provides software distribution and redistribution without requiring specialized server software or hardware. This package can be utilized in a standalone environment or integrated with existing enterprise management software such as Microsoft Systems Management Server, HP OpenView, or IBM Tivoli to provide one-stop control and reporting. The NETDEPLOY GLOBAL suite includes a number of defined service packages that help large corporations migrate to a managed software environment, and to Windows 2000 itself.

Go Wireless

NetMorf

NetMorf Inc. has rolled out SiteMorfer 2.0, which extends e-commerce sites to wireless devices by integrating directly with a companys back-end data sources. SiteMorfer allows companies to expand their Web presence by enabling wireless devices to act as clients. Users can integrate data directly from the back-end data sources, then securely transfer the content from the source to the appropriate wireless device. SiteMorfer automatically detects the protocol and device making a content request and generates the relevant protocolâ€"PQA for Palm computers, WML/HDML for WAP-compatible devices, compact HTML for Microsoft Windows CE-based devices, or Short Messaging Service for SMS-compatible phones and pagers. Ultimately, it delivers mobile access to a companys Internet operations. Through its data source plug-ins, SiteMorfer links companies directly to the critical data and processesâ€"not just the HTMLâ€"for performance and scalability. SiteMorfer supports a broad range of sources including databases, XML, HTTP, and application and transaction servers.
SiteMorfer Designer includes many prebuilt templates for designing and launching wireless applications. Some of the templates include online shopping/retail, online trading, and online auctions. SiteMorfer supports Windows NT®, Sun Solaris, and Linux.

Integrating Banner Ads with the Order Desk

Cydoor Technologies

Cydoor Technologies Inc., the developer of OnSoftware proprietary technology that enables software to display Internet ads and execute e-commerce transactions, has announced that the Software Development Kit enabling this integration is now available. Cydoors SDK creates a fixed screen space called the Cydoor Space, an active banner through which Internet-based activities are performed. The user orders a product offline by clicking on this banner, which takes them directly to the stored pages from the advertiser or e-commerce Web site. The user interacts with the pages, fills out forms, and provides data. The next time Cydoors OnSoftware system detects that the user is online, the information gathered from the user is sent to the advertisers servers.
Cydoor Space also plays audio, animation, and video files and supports Flash and other Web-based technologies. Software developers can sell the Cydoor Space to advertisers and e-commerce merchants. Alternatively, developers can use the space themselves to send their customers messages, software updates, and information packages.

Security Test and Analysis Tool

Sunbelt Software

Sunbelt Software Inc. recently introduced STAT 3.0 (Security Test and Analysis Tool), a security system that performs a complete vulnerability analysis of Windows NT-based network resources and provides updates through Web downloads as breaches are identified and fixes determined. STAT examines the Windows NT administrators network, determining weak spots and repairing security problems in the network via continuous vulnerability updates and the STAT AutoFix. The AutoFix feature allows users to automatically fix vulnerabilities across the network with a single mouse click.
STAT 3.0 offers their vulnerability database update via the STATonline Web site. This site is maintained by the STAT Operations Center, a team of security specialists who update the Web site monthly. The new STAT 3.0 comes with greater scalability and flexibility of network configuration, enhanced screen navigation, detection of hidden machines by typing the IP address, and a new report function.

Tools for Webmasters

Web Crossing

Web Crossing Inc. has released Web Crossing 3.1, with spell checking and server-side JavaScript. Web Crossing 3.1 also includes self-scheduled backups, NNTP support, HTML-only chat, and an implementation of the newly integrated XML-based Remote Procedure Call (XML-RPC) standard.
Web Crossing is now customizable with the integration of server-side JavaScript, which provides an open-sourced, industry standard, object-oriented language for developers to create add-on modules for Web Crossing. JavaScript add-on components can become persistent objects that can be stored in a database and reused. Connecting Web Crossing to other servers and clients across a network is accomplished with XML-RPC.
For Webmasters who want an alternative to Java-based chat, server-side HTML-based chat is integrated directly into version 3.1. New NNTP support lets Webmasters incorporate Net News traffic directly into normal system traffic or into ongoing Web Crossing discussions.
Threads and discussions have traditionally been moveable in their entirety, but now an advanced housekeeping tool for moving individual messages helps discussion moderators keep threads on topic. With version 3.1, Web Crossing supports highly robust clustered servers for redundancy and easy scaling to higher traffic.

Multidimensional Web Graphics

BeatWare

BeatWare Inc. recently announced e-Picture 2.0 for Windows, MacOS, and BeOS. It allows Web profes-sionals to create multidimensional Web graphics that can be exported to their choice of format including Flash, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), animated GIF, and a number of popular video file formats including QuickTime, RealNetworks G2, and AVI.
Additional enhancements in version 2.0 include advanced nonlinear animation capabilities and the ability to create, import, and animate 3D within 2D Web graphics.
e-Picture simplifies the design process with its single-layer approach to animation, creating movement sequences on a single layer. By noting an objects initial and final positions, e-Picture automatically generates the objects position in the intermediate frames as required to create the desired effect.
After previewing the image quality, file size, and download time of an animation under various file formats, users can choose to export their animation to any supported format. The products expanded 3D capabilities make it even easier to add depth and perspective to 2D Web graphics. Designers can now choose to import 3D models from other sources or to transform or extrude 3D text from 2D text within the application. Also, graphics generated by Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, and TWAIN-compliant digital cameras and scanners can now be imported directly into e-Picture and edited.

The Bookshelf

OReilly

Python Programming on Win32® (OReilly & Associates, 2000), demonstrates how to use Python as a serious development and administration tool for Windows. Mark Hammond and Andy Robinson have collaborated on this book about taking advantage of Python on Windowsâ€"or taking advantage of Windows with Python. Already well-established in the Unix and Linux worlds, Python is also emerging as a useful tool for programmers targeting Windows. Hammond wrote many of the Windows-based extensions in the book and co-authored the Python COM framework and extensions. The inside knowledge he and Robinson provide uncovers even the murkiest details of the implementation. Chapter 12, "Advanced Python and COM," is available online at https://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pythonwin32/chapter/ch12.html.
