SharePoint 2013 includes four API reference libraries:

  • .NET server API reference for SharePoint 2013 - Contains APIs that you can use to build and customize .NET server sites and farm solutions. In general we recommend that you do not use this library going forward, and instead use the client APIs.

  • .NET client API reference for SharePoint 2013 - Contains APIs that you can use to build .NET client (CSOM), Silverlight, Windows Phone, and JavaScriptapps for SharePoint, sites, and farm solutions. Most APIs that are available for you to create .NET server solutions are also available in CSOM and Silverlight programming models.

  • JavaScript API reference for SharePoint 2013 - Contains APIs that you can use to build JavaScript apps for SharePoint and create custom behaviors for your sites and solutions. Most APIs that are available for you to create .NET client and Silverlight solutions are also available in JavaScript.

  • REST API reference and samples - Describes the REST APIs that you can use to create client applications and  apps for SharePoint. Most of the functionality that is found in the .NET client and JavaScript APIs can be accessed through REST as well.

For information about which set of APIs to use, see Choose the right API set in SharePoint 2013.
