Content-restriction ratings

[ This article is for Windows 8.x and Windows Phone 8.x developers writing Windows Runtime apps. If you’re developing for Windows 10, see the latest documentation ]

Purpose

The ContentRestrictions API provides GetRestrictionLevelAsync and RequestContentAccessAsync methods that allow your app to determine whether a piece of content can be browsed in an app's content catalog and used by a particular user, based on that user’s Family Safety content settings and on the content's properties. These content properties are expressed by the RatedContentDescription object.

Important  This section refers specifically to the ContentRestrictions API. For info about the age rating process used when submitting apps to the Windows Store, see Age ratings.

Topic Description

Using content ratings

For every piece of content to be used by an app in GetRestrictionLevelAsync and RequestContentAccessAsync methods, the app must provide a RatedContentDescription.Ratings value that reflects the age for which that content is appropriate.

Store age ratings

To select a suitable Store age rating for a piece of content, follow the guidance here.

Supported content-rating boards

The ContentRestrictions API supports these rating boards.
