Convert.ToInt16 Method (UInt32)

Converts the value of the specified 32-bit unsigned integer to an equivalent 16-bit signed integer.

This API is not CLS-compliant.

Namespace:   System
Assembly:  mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll)

<CLSCompliantAttribute(False)>
Public Shared Function ToInt16 (
	value As UInteger
) As Short

Parameters

value
Type: System.UInt32

The 32-bit unsigned integer to convert.

Return Value

Type: System.Int16

A 16-bit signed integer that is equivalent to value.

Exception Condition
OverflowException

value is greater than Int16.MaxValue.

The following example attempts to convert each element in an array of unsigned integers to a 16-bit signed integer.

Dim numbers() As UInteger = { UInt32.MinValue, 121, 340, UInt32.MaxValue }
Dim result As Short
For Each number As UInteger In numbers
   Try
      result = Convert.ToInt16(number)
      Console.WriteLine("Converted the {0} value {1} to a {2} value {3}.", _
                        number.GetType().Name, number, _
                        result.GetType().Name, result)
   Catch e As OverflowException
      Console.WriteLine("The {0} value {1} is outside the range of the Int16 type.", _
                        number.GetType().Name, number)
   End Try
Next
' The example displays the following output:
'    Converted the UInt32 value 0 to a Int16 value 0.
'    Converted the UInt32 value 121 to a Int16 value 121.
'    Converted the UInt32 value 340 to a Int16 value 340.
' The UInt32 value 4294967295 is outside the range of the Int16 type.
