New for System Devices

The Windows Driver Kit (WDK) that is released with Windows Vista introduces two new system device technologies:

  • Windows Hardware Error Architecture

  • Dynamic Hardware Partitioning

Windows Hardware Error Architecture

The Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) extends the hardware error reporting mechanisms in previous versions of Windows and brings them together as components of a coherent hardware error infrastructure. WHEA takes advantage of the additional hardware error information available in today's hardware devices and integrates much more closely with the system firmware. WHEA allows for more extensive error data to be made available in a standard error record format to help determine the root cause of hardware errors.

Dynamic Hardware Partitioning

Dynamic Hardware Partitioning (DHP) is a new technology that will be initially supported in Windows Server 2008. DHP is introduced in the WDK that is released with Windows Vista to help driver developers become aware of the critical issues that can affect the behavior of all types of device drivers if they are run on dynamically partitionable servers. Driver developers should start considering these issues in their current driver designs so that they are prepared for DHP when Windows Server 2008 is released.
