Remarks

The value of DEVPKEY_Device_InstanceId is set internally by Windows during the installation of a device instance.

You can call SetupDiGetDeviceProperty to retrieve the value of DEVPKEY_Device_InstanceId for a device instance.

Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 support this property, but do not support the DEVPKEY_Device_InstanceId property key. For information about how to retrieve a device instance identifier on these earlier versions of Windows, see Retrieving a Device Instance Identifier.
