Windows 8 Portable Device Enabling Kit for MTP
The Windows 8 Portable Device Enabling Kit (DEK) for Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) includes the MTP Device Simulator, which you can use to simulate a device that complies with the MTP Specification. The MTP Specification includes support for MTP Device Services for Windows.

The Windows 8 DEK is designed to assist portable device manufacturers in the development of device firmware that is compatible with these protocols which Windows supports with Class Drivers natively. The MTP Device Simulator or MtpSim can also be used to prototype Windows Store style device apps that are capable of communicating with a portable device connected to a Windows 8 system. Portable devices in this context include Mobile Phones, Portable Media Players, Digital Still Cameras, Digital Video Cameras, and slates, to name a few. The MtpSim is fully compliant with the MTP specification and is used to validate the Portable Device tests in the Windows Certification Kit for Hardware.
The DEK includes the MTP Device Simulator (with built in MTP Device Inspector), Device Simulation Framework (DSF) for soft USB support, and general design documentation & implementation guidelines for MTP devices.
Note that if the Windows 7 Portable Device Enabling Kit for MTP is installed on your machine, you'll need to uninstall it before installing the Windows 8 kit.

The Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit, version 12, was released on April 30, 2007, and still applies to developing MTP-based devices on Windows Vista and Windows XP.
The Windows 7 Portable Device Enabling Kit for MTP, Version 7R2, was released on June 25, 2009, and still applies to developing MTP-based devices on Windows 7.
