relative distinguished name

Name that uniquely identifies a host within its own domain, but not throughout the entire DNS hierarchy. For example, server1 is a relative distinguished name, while server1.products.Microsoft.com is a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

resolver

A software component bundled in the Windows Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stack that communicates with DNS Servers to create and resolve name-resolution queries.

resource record (RR)

The unit of information in the DNS. There are many types of resource records.

root

The uppermost level in a given hierarchy.
