Installing the GPMC Class Library

The Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) Class Library is packaged as a .NET assembly that ships within the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) product. The GPMC is automatically installed on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. You need only enable the feature via the Server Manager. For client operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7, you need to download and install the Remote Server Administration Tool (RSAT) and enable the GPMC feature via Control Panel. The following table explains how to install and enable the GPMC based on your operating system:

Operating System Installation Procedure

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2
  1. Open the Server Manager application.

  2. On the left side, click Features.

  3. On the right side, click Add Features.

  4. After the features list populates, select the Group Policy Management feature.

  5. Click Install.

Windows Vista
  1. Install the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows Vista.

  2. In Control Panel, open the Turn Windows features on or off applet.

  3. Expand Remote Server Administration Tools.

  4. Expand Feature Administration Tools.

  5. Select Group Policy Management Tools.

  6. Click OK.

Windows 7
  1. Install the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7.

  2. In Control Panel, open the Turn Windows features on or off applet.

  3. Expand Remote Server Administration Tools.

  4. Expand Feature Administration Tools.

  5. Select Group Policy Management Tools.

  6. Click OK.
