Drop-Down Menus: UI Text GuidelinesĀ

For guidelines for any menu UI text, see Menus: UI Text.

  • In a menu bar, use single words for menu labels. A multiple-word label might be confused for two one-word labels. However, don't create artificial compound words, such as Fontsize, either. Make menu command labels as brief as possible, but clearly describe the functionality.
  • When describing the selection of a drop-down menu command, refer to the two-click method of selection. Do not refer to the single-click method (clicking the menu label, dragging the mouse pointer to the menu command, and then releasing the mouse button).
  • Use unique menu labels across the menu bar or within an individual menu. Labels can be repeated in different menus when they represent similar actions.
