Installing the WMI ODBC Adapter

The WMI ODBC adapter is also supported as a value-added extension to the operating system installation of WMI.

Note  For more information about support or requirements for installation on a specific operating system, see Operating System Availability of WMI Components.

Use the Control Panel ODBC utility to add, modify, or delete data sources. A system data source known as WBEM Source is created when WMI is installed. WBEM Source is available to all users and services on a computer. You can set up a user data source, which is available only to the current logged-on user, with the Control Panel ODBC utility.

The following procedure describes how to add a user data source.

  1. Open Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools and then Data Sources (ODBC).
  2. In the ODBC Data Source Administrator, click Add on the User DSN tab.
  3. In the Create New Data Source dialog box, select WBEM ODBC Driver.
  4. Click Finish. In the Setup WBEM ODBC Datasource dialog box, you are prompted for a data source name. This name is just a label you use to refer to this data source. It can be almost any combination of letters or numbers.

You can install the ODBC software programmatically, silently or nonsilently, from Systems Management Server (SMS) startup or a menu option. The SQLInstallODBC function is called to install the ODBC software, drivers, and adapters.
