Accessing Process Guidance in Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel

The work item add-ins for Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel provide access to process guidance. The process guidance is context-sensitive to the team project you are working on. For example, if you are working in a Microsoft Excel work item list from the AdventureWorks team project, accessing process guidance will display the AdventureWorks process guidance content.

Process guidance provides information about how work is coordinated on a team project, and is useful if you need to understand how the current document is used in the overall project life cycle. Also, if you work on several different projects with different processes, you might have to review process specific details about the current document you are editing.

Access to Process Guidance

In Microsoft Project you must be connected to a team project. The Help menu has a menu item named Team Project Process Guidance. When clicked, that menu item starts the process guidance home page associated with the current project.

In Microsoft Excel you must have a work item list that is connected to a team project. When the selection is in the work item list, the Help group on the Team tab has an item named Team Project Process Guidance. When clicked, that item starts the process guidance home page associated with the current work item list.

Note

If you are working on a computer that is disconnected from the Team Foundation server, you will not have access to the process guidance because the process guidance content resides on the Team Foundation server.

Supported Process Templates

Both the MSF for Agile Software Development and MSF for CMMI Process Improvement process templates contain process guidance deployed on the project portal. If a custom process template does not contain process guidance, the Team Project Process Guidance is not available. To determine whether your process template contains process guidance, contact the author of the process template.
