Extend Reference Path Dialog Box

Visual Studio .NET 2003

When you add a reference to a project with the Add Reference dialog box, the project system updates the property that tracks the directories to search to resolve assembly references.

If adding a directory results in any existing references being resolved differently, this dialog box appears.

For more information, see Reference Path, Common Properties, <Projectname> Property Pages Dialog Box for Visual Basic projects and References Path, Common Properties, <Projectname> Property Pages Dialog Box for Visual C# projects to learn more about how the project system searches for assembly references.

The message in this dialog box is informational. Selecting Yes causes the reference path to be appended at the beginning with the name of the directory that contains the reference you are adding. Otherwise, the reference path will not be modified, and the reference will not be added.

Here are two other ways to resolve this condition:

  • Add the assembly to the project and reference it from there.
  • Rearrange the paths in which references are stored so that conflicts do not occur.
