Enabling and Disabling Edit and Continue

Edit and Continue applies to C/C++ programs only.

You can disable or enable Edit and Continue in the Options dialog box. Edit and Continue works only in debug builds and requires the /INCREMENTAL option.

To enable/disable Edit and Continue

  1. From the Tools Menu, click Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, select the Debugging folder.
  3. In the Edit and Continue group, select or clear the Enable Edit and Continue check box.
  4. Click OK.

When you edit code while debugging, Edit and Continue can apply the changes:

  • Explicitly, when you select Apply Code Changes from the Debug menu

  • Automatically, when you select a Go or Step command.

When you apply code changes explicitly, Edit and Continue updates the compiled code you are debugging, but does not step or resume execution.
