Console.SetError Method

Sets the Error property to the specified TextWriter object.

Type: System.IO.TextWriter

A TextWriter stream that is the new standard error output.


newError is null.


The caller does not have the required permission.


The HostProtectionAttribute attribute applied to this type or member has the following Resources property value: UI. The HostProtectionAttribute does not affect desktop applications (which are typically started by double-clicking an icon, typing a command, or entering a URL in a browser). By default, the Error property is set to the standard error output stream.

A StreamWriter that encapsulates a FileStream can be used to send error messages to a file.

The following example shows how to redirect the standard error stream to a file.
