Registry Settings Overview

Office 2003

This topic provides a description of the registry subkeys and values associated with the Research task pane and the services it makes available to users.

Each service that is available to a user is defined by a set of registry settings on the client computer. A user can create these settings by installing a new research service through the user interface of a compatible Microsoft® Office 2003 application, or an administrator can deploy these settings to users by various means. For more information, see Deployment Overview.

All research information lives in one of the following registry subkeys:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research

By default, research provider and service settings are stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research\Sources subkey. A parallel branch with similar information may exist under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research\Sources for use in certain deployment scenarios. For each user of the local computer, Office copies any services registered in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key branch to HKEY_CURRENT_USER through a process called propagation. For more information, see "How to Control the Installation of Default Services" in Controlling Service Installation Options. A few global Research task pane settings are also stored under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

The research sections of the registry normally have the following layout:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
