Active Directory and CDOEXM

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

Performing management with CDO for Exchange Management (CDOEXM) involves gathering and modifying information in Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003 and Microsoft Active Directory® in Microsoft Windows® server operating systems. Active Directory information is configured in namespaces by using LDAP. It is important to understand the role of Active Directory for Exchange Server 2003.

In CDOEXM classes, the IDataSource2 interface is provided for opening, managing, saving, and deleting Exchange-related Active Directory objects.

CDOEXM and ADSI

The Exchange Server 2003 data that resides in Active Directory can be accessed by using Active Directory® Service Interfaces (ADSI). ADSI is a generic API, however, that has no specific functions for managing the Exchange data in Active Directory. Also, ADSI cannot access data in Exchange Server 2003.

CDOEXM encapsulates and simplifies Exchange management tasks so that data in both Active Directory and Exchange are managed as needed.

For information about a class for obtaining and building Active Directory paths, see the ADSI Pathname section in the Platform SDK.
