The Exchange SDK Development Tools are productivity enhancement tools for developing Exchange store applications.

Tools Installation

You can install the tools on a server running Microsoft® Windows® server operating systems and on other computers. Some tools, as described later in this topic, are only used with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

To install the Exchange SDK Development Tools

  1. Download the ExchTools.exe file from MSDN.
  2. Run ExchTools.exe on your computer to install the tools.

The Exchange SDK Development Tools Setup Wizard installs the tools in the \Program Files\Exchange SDK\Tools folder.

Tools Overview

This documentation covers the following tools:

  • Exchange Store TreeView Control

The TreeView control tool is a Microsoft ActiveX® control for displaying and manipulating any node hierarchy in the Exchange store. You can use this control in Microsoft Visual Basic®, Microsoft Visual C++®, or other COM-based developer products running on a client or on Exchange Server 2003.

Note  A heavily commented Visual Basic project that manipulates the TreeView control is available. If you installed the Exchange Server 2003 Software Development Kit (SDK), you can modify the SDKTreeView Visual Basic project to create an application using the TreeView control. These project files are in the SDK Samples\SDKTreeView folder.

  • Exchange Explorer

This explorer is a Visual Basic application that facilitates creating property and content class definitions, defining schema scope, as well as wizards that create form and event registrations. The explorer provides two views for each folder, its items and its schema. You can use this tool remotely or on a computer running Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft SharePoint™ Portal Server 2001.

  • Exchange Store Event Sink Wizard

The Event Sink Wizard tool is a Visual Basic Add-In Wizard that creates a project of commented code for adding an event sink to respond to Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange store events. You can only use this tool on Exchange Server 2003.

  • Exchange Workflow Configuration Scripts

The workflow configuration scripts tool has Visual Basic scripts to set up the essentials for an Exchange store Workflow application. You can only use this tool on an Exchange Server 2003 computer that is a domain controller.

  • Exchange Application Deployment Wizard

The Application Deployment Wizard tool packages Exchange store applications for the Microsoft Windows® Installer. You can use this tool remotely or on a computer running Exchange Server 2003 or SharePoint Portal Server.

  • Managed Exchange TreeView Control

The managed Exchange TreeView control displays a hierarchical list of node objects that corresponds to folders in the Exchange store. You can use this control in Microsoft .NET Framework Windows forms applications running on a client or on a computer running Exchange Server 2003.
