Introduction to the Exchange Explorer

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

The Microsoft® Exchange Explorer provides a visual framework for doing the following:

  • Exploring folders, items, and properties
  • Creating property and content class definitions, and configuring their schema scope
  • Creating event and form registrations using wizards
  • Saving property information to an XML file

This tool frees you from having to write ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) or OLE DB code to perform these tasks. You can use the Explorer on Exchange Server 2003 or on client computers.

Explorer Components

The screen shot of the Exchange Explorer shows an expanded public folder hierarchy and a list of property values for an item in a public folder.

The Explorer contains the following panes:

  • The left pane, Exchange Store Hierarchy, contains the root node for a virtual directory in the Exchange store. The virtual root can be an Exchange Server 2003 mailbox, public folder, or a new public folder tree.
  • The right pane, Detail View, contains two nodes: the schema node and the item node. The schema node expands to display the currently selected folder's schema. This node is a hierarchical view of properties used for defining property and content class definitions. The item node expands to list any items that the folder contains. Keep in mind that a content class or property definition is itself an item and will also appear in the item list.
  • The lower-right pane displays the data types and values for any selected folder, item, registration item, property definition, or content class definition.

File Menu and Right-Click Options

The File menu lists options for creating folders, items, definitions, and registrations. These options also appear when right-clicking folders, items, and other elements in the Explorer. Additional options, such as deleting, refreshing, and listing property values, appear when applicable.

If you want to change the source Exchange store URL, on the File menu, click Connect To.
