Running the RDP User Scenario Performance Test

The RDP User Scenario Performance Test requires an RDP server, such as a Windows XP Professional-based development workstation, against which to test the Windows CE-based device. On the RDP server, you must install the WinBench 99 application.

WinBench 99 is a product of VeriTest and must be licensed directly to you by VeriTest under the WinBench 99 end-user license agreement (EULA). For more information about the WinBench 99 application, see this VeriTest Web site.

To run the RDP User Scenario Performance Test

  1. Choose a Windows XP Professional–based development workstation to use as an RDP server.

Note   Windows XP Professional allows only one active session at a time. Therefore, the RDP server should not be the same development workstation as the development workstation that runs Platform Builder. The Windows CE–based device cannot open a Remote Desktop session to the development workstation while the session with Platform Builder runs.

  2. On the RDP server, run the RDPPerfConfig.exe application.

You can find the RDPPerfConfig.exe file in <Platform Builder installation path>\Cepb\Wcetk\Ddtk\Nt.

The RDPPerfConfig.exe application creates a test account with a user name that you specify, verifies that the WinBench 99 application is installed, and completes other tasks required to configure the RDP server to run the RDP User Scenario Performance Test.

Note   The wizard enforces password policy if there is a policy on the domain. When the wizard requests that you enter a password for the test account, enter a password that conforms to the policy. If the policy requires a strong password, you cannot proceed to the next page of the wizard unless you enter a strong password.

  3. If the WinBench 99 application is not installed, download and install WinBench 99 by choosing the link to a Web site provided in RDPPerfConfig.exe.

Choose the version of WinBench 99 without graphics.

  4. After installing WinBench 99 on the RDP server, log off of Windows XP on the RDP server and then log on to Windows XP with the user name that you specified for the test account.

The WinBench 99 application automatically starts.

Note   If a pop-up window appears for the Windows XP Tour, close the window to prevent it from reappearing later. If the window appears while the test runs, the test results are skewed by the additional time required to transfer the data that describes the window over RDP and to display the window on the target device.

  5. Follow the steps to accept the EULA for WinBench 99 and then close the WinBench 99 application.

  6. On the development workstation that runs Platform Builder, specify -d, -u, -s, and -p parameters for the RDP User Scenario Performance Test.

For information about specifying command-line parameters for a CETK test, see Editing the Command Line for a Test. The following table shows the command-line parameters for the RDP User Scenario Performance Test.

    Command-line entry Result
    -d<domain>
Specifies the domain of the test account that you created on the RDP server. Typically, the test account is a local user on the RDP server, so the name of the domain is the same as the name of the RDP server.
    -u<user name>
Specifies the user name of the test account that you created on the RDP server.
    -s<machine name>
Specifies the name of the RDP server.
    -p<password>
Specifies the password for the test account on the RDP server.
    -?
Displays information about the Rdptest command in the Platform Builder integrated development environment (IDE). The information appears in the Output window, on the Debug tab.
  7. Run the RDP User Scenario Performance Test.

For more information about running a CETK test, see Running the CETK Tests.

When you run the test, an RDP session starts on the Windows CE–based device and connects to the RDP server. After starting the test, you may need to again follow the steps to accept the EULA for WinBench 99. One or more dialog boxes may appear in the RDP window. If a dialog box appears, close the dialog box to continue the test.

Before running the RDP test a second time on the same Windows CE–based device, delete the run registry entry from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows key in the registry of the RDP server.
