MMC Snap-Ins

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

In earlier versions of Microsoft® Exchange Server, the gateway employed an Administrator extension dynamic-link library (DLL) to extend the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program with the custom property pages that were required for gateway administration. The functionality previously provided by the Administrator extension DLL is now provided by custom snap-ins that extend the Exchange System Manager. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) provides consistent and extensible user interfaces across all Microsoft products.

The Exchange 2000 Sample Gateway creates three snap-ins, which it then adds to the Exchange System Manager to extend its administrative capabilities. These snap-ins can be reused by any custom gateway.

The Sample Gateway uses the following three MMC snap-ins:

  • SgwAdmin.ocx: Provides property pages that are used to install, remove, and administer the Sample Gateway.
  • ExconnPp.ocx: Provides additional property pages used in the administration of the gateway.
  • AddrType.ocx: Provides property pages that are used to install and remove Address Types in Microsoft Active Directory®.

These snap-ins were created using the MMC Snap-In Designer for Microsoft Visual Basic®, which must be installed separately in Microsoft Visual Studio®. For more information about this application, see Software Requirements.
