Validate Services for UNIX Capability

2/13/2013

Services for UNIX enables you to integrate your Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) device into an existing UNIX environment. Services for UNIX is an enterprise capability that you must enable by applying a volume license key to your Standard 8 image.

Before you can run the following tests, you need the following:

  • A Standard 8 device that has enterprise capabilities activated with a volume license key.

You can verify that Services for UNIX is activated by installing an SDK that is provided by Microsoft and starting a UNIX shell.

  1. Download and install the Utilities and SDK for Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications from the Microsoft Download Center.

  2. Open a command prompt with administrator rights, and type the following command:

    C:\Windows\System32\posix /u /c /bin/ksh -l

    JJ984564.Caution(en-us,WinEmbedded.81).gifCaution:
If your device uses Dialog Filter, make sure that the default action for Dialog Filter is not set to close all windows.
  3. If Services for UNIX is activated, then this command opens a new window that operates as a UNIX shell.

If the command returns without opening a new window, then Services for UNIX is not activated.
