Welcome (Standard 8)

7/8/2014

Review the major sections of the Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) technical documentation library.

Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) brings Windows 8 features to an x86 or x64 device. With Standard 8, you can build a small operating system (OS) without the features you do not need. Standard 8 also contains all the security, entertainment, and ease-of-use improvements found in Windows 8.

The Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit (Standard 8 Toolkit) uses the image-based deployment technologies in Windows 8. For IT professionals, this means you can use the flexible deployment and servicing solutions from Windows 8 with Standard 8, including secure remote device management.

Purpose

This documentation will help you learn about and use Standard 8. It is designed to be effective for multiple learning styles as well as multiple levels of knowledge of both embedded systems and of previous versions of Windows Embedded.

Intended Audience

This documentation is intended primarily for manufacturers and developers of Standard 8 systems. It is not intended as end-user documentation for the consumers of devices produced with Standard 8.

Organization

The major sections of this documentation, excluding this Welcome section, are:

  • Inside Standard 8
This section will give you a closer look at key concepts, tools and the way all the pieces of Standard 8 fit together. You may want to start here if you are new to Windows Embedded Standard or if you want a big picture overview of Standard 8.
  • Task Instructions
This section contains individual step-by-step instructions on how to carry out tasks in Standard 8.
  • Lab Exercises
This section contains end-to-end lab exercises that will walk you through key scenarios for Standard 8. Although the lab exercises are self-contained, some of them can be used to build on other lab exercises or to provide a required item for another lab exercise. You may want to start here if you like to immediately use the product as you learn about it.
  • Technical Reference
This section is the in-depth technical reference on both the tools and modules for Standard 8. You may want to start here if you just need a detail or two on a particular tool or feature, but this section is not a recommended starting point.
