Troubleshoot working with other programs

The data I exported to Excel has more or less information than I expected.

  • Selecting an area or shape at a high altitude could result in unreliable export data. It is possible that the two-dimensional shape will extend beyond the three-dimensional curvature of the Earth that is rendered on the map. To avoid this problem, try the following:

Select the shape, and on the View menu, point to Zoom map, and then click To selection.

  • Data that does not appear entirely within the selected area or shape may or may not be exported. Every mapped data point has a centroid—a point representing the center of the geographic area to which the data is mapped—that is affected by the map projection and elevation. If the centroid for a particular data point is within the selected area or shape, the data is exported, and if not, the data is not exported. For some data, you may have better results creating a more precise shape, surrounding the data subset that you want to export.

When I copy a map to another document, I can't get the map that I want.

Try any combination of the following ways to change the size or dimension of the map window before you copy the map:

I can't find the MapPoint toolbar button or menu items in my Office program.

The MapPoint Office COM add-in is available only in the following Office programs:

  • Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or later

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or later

  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 or later

  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 or later

  • Microsoft Office Visio 2007 or later

  • Microsoft Office Word 2007 or later

If the MapPoint toolbar button or menu items don't appear in one of the programs listed above, the MapPoint Office COM add-in may have been unloaded or removed for that program.

For users of Office 2007 or later

  1. Start the Microsoft Office program.

  2. Click the Office Button in the upper-left corner of the screen, and then click the program's Options button at the bottom of the open window (for example, Excel Options or Word Options).

  3. In the program's Options window, in the left pane, click Add-Ins.

  4. In the Manage box near the bottom of the window, click COM Add-ins, and then click Go.

  5. Check the list of available add-ins, and then do one of the following:

    • If available, select the MapPoint Office Add-in check box, and then click OK.

    • If the Microsoft Office COM add-in does not appear, reinstall the add-in.

I can't send a picture of the map by e-mail.

The Mail recipient (as picture) command on the Send to submenu of the File menu is available only if you have Microsoft Office Outlook installed. If you have an e-mail program other than Office Outlook and you want to send a picture of the map to someone who doesn't have MapPoint, you can do one of the following:
