Search pane

Using the Search feature, you can search by:

  • Specific business name

  • Category (What)

  • Location (Where)

  • Any combination of the above

After you choose a search method, you can see your search results in the Search results pane, which displays the results of your search for locations by category.

Search by category

You can search by business name, category, and keyword. The Search feature searches the area currently visible on the map.

  1. In the Find box to the left of the binoculars, type or select (if previously entered) one of the following:

    • Business name. For example: Coho Vineyard and Winery

    • Business category. For example: laundromat

    • Keyword. For example: car

  2. To start the search, press ENTER, or click the binoculars to the right of the Find box.

Note   When your search is complete, the search results appear in the Search results pane. To show or hide the Search results pane, click Search Results  Gg650261.WLS(en-us,MSDN.10).jpg on the Standard toolbar.

Search by location

You don’t have to know an exact street address to find a location. You can enter a partial address, place or neighborhood name, or even a major landmark.

  1. In the Find box to the left of the binoculars, type or select (if previously entered) one of the following:

    • A full address. For example: 123 Cherry Lane, Anytown, OH 54321

Note   To ensure the best possible match, include as much of the address as you can, and use commas.

    • A partial address. For example: Chicago, IL, United States

    • A place name. For example: Lincoln Memorial

    • A neighborhood name. For example: University District, Seattle, WA

    • A major landmark. For example: Grand Canyon

  2. To start the search, press ENTER, or click the binoculars to the right of the Find box.

  3. If more than one location is found, a list appears in the Find dialog box. Click the desired location in the list, and then click OK.

Notes

  • If you are searching for a place rather than an address, using additional information (such as city, state, or country) can help narrow the search results.

  • When your Search is complete, the map centers on the location. Specific sites such as buildings are marked with pushpins.

  • To show or hide the Search results pane, click Search Results  Gg650261.WLS(en-us,MSDN.10).jpg on the Standard toolbar.

Search by category and location

You can search for any category in any location regardless of the visible map area. You can also find a category of businesses near a specific address or within a specific ZIP code.

  1. In the Find box to the left of the binoculars, type or select the category that you are searching for. If you are searching for a location, include the city, address, or landmark.

For example, to find museums near the following address, you can type either Museum (37 S. Wabash Ave Ste 1, Chicago, IL 60603), or (37 S. Wabash Ave Ste 1, Chicago, IL 60603) Museum. To find museums within the 60603 ZIP code, type Museum (60603, Illinois, United States).

Specifying the address or ZIP code in parentheses will lead to more specific search results.

  2. To start the search, press ENTER, or click the binoculars to the right of the Find box.

  3. If more than one location is found, a list appears in the Find dialog box. Click the desired location in the list, and then click OK.

Notes

  • When your Search is complete, the map centers on the location. Specific sites such as buildings are marked with a pushpin.

  • To show or hide the Search results pane, click Search Results  Gg650261.WLS(en-us,MSDN.10).jpg on the Standard toolbar

About search results

In the Search results pane, up to 10 search results are listed at once. The closest results are listed first, starting from the location provided (or the current map view).

Each search result displays the following details about each item:

  • List number Gg650261.ListNumber(en-us,MSDN.10).gif, which corresponds to a numbered pushpin on the map

  • Business name

  • Address and phone number

If your computer is connected to the Internet at the time you did a search, you will be able to see reviews of search result items and add your own reviews to them.

View search results that produced more than 10 items

If your search produced more than 10 items, you can move forward and backward through the list to view the additional items.

To move through the list, do one of the following:

  • To move forward, click the Next button Gg650261.NextResults(en-us,MSDN.10).gif.

  • To move backward, click the Previous button Gg650261.PrevResults(en-us,MSDN.10).gif.

Note   If there are 10 or fewer results, the Next and Previous buttons will not be available.

Display a search result on the map

Click a list number symbol Gg650261.ListNumber(en-us,MSDN.10).gif in the list of search results to display the information balloon for that item on the map.

Notes

  • Unlike regular MapPoint pushpins, the pushpins created from search results cannot be moved, deleted, or renamed.

  • Search result pushpins do not appear as pushpin sets in the Legend and overview pane. You can hide a pushpin balloon by clicking the Close button Gg650261.PushpinClose(en-us,MSDN.10).gif.

  • To add a search result to a route, click Add to route under the name of the location you want.

Go to a Web site for a search result

If the search result displays a business name as a hyperlink, you can view that site in your default browser.

  • In the search result, click the link to go to the associated Web site.

Clear all search results

You can clear all of your search results from the Search results pane by using one button.

  • In the Search results pane, click the Clear button at the bottom of the pane.
