Navigation features

You can use various features to enhance your navigation experience.

GPS task pane

The GPS task pane displays current information from your GPS device that includes:

  • The speed at which you are traveling

  • Your latitude and longitude coordinates

  • The last time your position was updated

  • Your compass heading

  • A bar graph that indicates the strength of the signals from the GPS satellites

You can also use the GPS task pane to set GPS options, to provide input to the Provide navigation feature, and to calculate routes from your current position.

Navigation pane

The Navigation pane provides text and voice guidance to help you follow your route. It also displays the driving time remaining on your trip (not including unplanned detours), which is updated every time your route changes. The Navigation pane appears at the bottom of the window when you select the Provide navigation check box. You can close and reopen the Navigation pane at any time. Doing so will not stop or start the navigation function.

Full screen navigation

By using full screen navigation, you get an enlarged view of the map as you travel along your route. An auto-hiding toolbar has easy-to-see buttons that control navigation features.

Voice instructions

If a speech engine is installed on your computer, voice instructions are on when you use the Provide navigation feature for the first time. If you prefer to use text instructions only, you can turn voice instructions off. You can restart voice instructions at any time. When you turn voice instructions off or on, they stay off or on the next time you use the provide navigation feature.

Pause Windows Media Player during spoken navigation instructions

If you listen to music or videos using Windows Media Player while you drive, you can choose to pause Windows Media Player whenever navigation instructions are spoken. When spoken navigation instructions are complete, MapPoint automatically restarts playing your music or video.
