Disable System Restore (Standard 7 SP1)

7/8/2014

You should not use System Restore with Enhanced Write Filter with HORM (EWF) because it can decrease the performance of EWF and consume additional space in the EWF overlay.

To disable System Restore by using the Image Configuration Editor

  1. In Image Configuration Editor, add the Enhanced Write Filter with HORM package to your answer file.

  2. In the Answer File pane, click the Enhanced Write Filter with HORM package to show the components.

  3. Click the SystemRestore-Main component.

  4. In the Settings Pane, click the Filter view by drop-down combo box, select 4 Specialize.

  5. Change the Value of the DisableSR setting to 1. A value of 0 enables System Restore and creates restore points according to events and a schedule. This is the default value. A value of 1 specifies that no more restore points will be created. This limits the ongoing usefulness of System Restore on the computer.

To disable System Restore by using a registry key

  • Add the following registry key to your run-time image:

    Disable System Restore:

    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\

    Value Name: DisableSR

    Type: REG_DWORD

    Value: 1

A value of 0 enables System Restore and creates restore points according to events and a schedule. This is the default value. A value of 1 specifies that no more restore points will be created. This limits the ongoing usefulness of System Restore on the computer.
