Deploy an Image built with Image Builder Wizard to a UFD

Follow the steps in this topic to use Windows Embedded Standard 7 to deploy an image to a USB flash device (UFD) by using Image Builder Wizard.

Deploy an image from Image Builder Wizard to a UFD

  1. Make sure that the UFD you want to install to is plugged into the device that is currently running the Image Builder Wizard. Also, make sure that there are no files on the UFD because they might be lost during installation.

    Note

    The Standard 7 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.

  2. Run Image Builder Wizard from the Windows Embedded Standard 7 Toolkit DVD. On the Please select Feature Packages to include in your image page, do the following:

    1. Under Embedded Enabling Features, select Bootable Windows USB Stack.

    2. Add any additional packages you want to include.

    3. Click the Resolve button and resolve all dependency issues.

      Warning

      If you are asked to choose between Standard Windows USB Stack and Bootable Windows USB Stack, make sure that you leave only Bootable Windows USB Stack checked.

    4. Continue resolving dependencies until finished.

  3. Make sure that the UFD is plugged into the device, and then select Next to continue.

  4. On the destination drive selection screen, select the UFD target. Partition and format the UFD, then continue the installation process.

  5. Allow Setup to finish.

Note

If you deploy an image that has not been prepared with Sysprep onto a UFD, the performance of the UFD will be greatly reduced during the first two boot instances. The compromised performance of the UFD occurs because the nonRemovable key is not created in the Windows Registry during the boot instances.

Note

If you are using a UFD with Windows PE to run the Image Builder Wizard and your installation target is a second UFD, after the file copy and when the restart begins, remove the Windows PE UFD from the system to prevent it from rebooting back into Setup.
