8/29/2011
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 is a system management software product for managing computers that run the Windows operating systems in a client/server environment. It provides solutions for management of servers, client computers, and devices across physical, virtual, distributed, and mobile environments. The key capabilities of Configuration Manager 2007 are:
- Software and hardware inventory.
- Distribution and installation of software applications.
- Distribution and installation of software updates, including security updates.
- Operating system deployment.
- Asset intelligence.
- Specification and monitoring of adherence to the desired configuration.
- Software metering.
- Remote control of computers to provide troubleshooting support.
To manage and support the above features, Configuration Manager 2007 has the following site server roles:
- Component server
- Device management point
- Distribution point
- Fallback status point
- Management point
- Server locator point
- Site server
- Site system
- Site database server
- Software update point
- Pre-Execution Environment (PXE) service point
- Asset intelligence synchronization point
Configuration Manager 2007 does not enable the above site server roles by default. It is not necessary to enable all of the site server roles, but it is necessary to enable the server locator point site server role to enable client communication. To support device management by Configuration Manager 2007, you must also enable the device management point site server role.
Configuration Manager 2007 has separate client applications for managing computers that run Windows Embedded Standard 7 (and related operating systems), and devices that run Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 (and related operating systems). The following table shows the client applications that are supported on various operating systems.
Client application name | Installation file names | Supported on |
---|---|---|
Configuration Manager 2007 Advanced Client |

Note: This client application also supports traditional client operating systems (Windows Vista, Windows 7) and server operating systems (Windows Server 2008); however, that is outside of the scope of this documentation. |
Windows Embedded CE Device Management Client |
