Specifying the Language for UI Controls

Current information about Live Connect is now available in the Windows Live Developer Center. The information in the following sections is provided for legacy purposes only.

The Windows Live Messenger Connect UI controls are localized into all supported languages. This topic explains how to specify the language for localized UI controls.

To specify the language in which the UI controls are displayed on your webpage, set the lang or xml:lang attribute of the <html> tag. Windows Live Messenger Connect first checks whether the lang attribute is set, for example, <html lang="ja-jp">, and then checks whether the xml:lang attribute is set, for example, <html xml:lang="ja-jp"). If neither attribute is specified, the UI controls are displayed in U.S. English by default.

For a list of languages that you can use as values for these attributes, see Appendix A: Supported Languages for Windows Live Messenger Connect.

To determine the direction of the text for the UI controls, the dir attribute of the HTML tag is evaluated. Valid values for dir are "ltr" or "rtl".
