Creating a Transcoding Project

If you want to edit your digital media sources and encode them as bit-streams compatible with Microsoft Silverlight VC-1 or H.264 without necessarily using or needing Silverlight templates, choose the Transcoding Project. (Note that in the Transcoding Project, you have the option of applying a template if you want to.) In this project, you are generally editing your content and then transcoding it to other formats. You would generally use the Transcoding Project to create or convert content for the following purposes:

  • Performing complex encoding jobs where you would have to extensively use such features as A/B Compare and Presets, or experiment with different encoding profiles in order to determine optimum settings.

  • Combining multiple clips and then quickly applying a Silverlight template to them.

  • Playing back your content on your Microsoft Zune or other mobile device.

  • Creating DVD content from captured video.

In this project, the Encode, Clips, Enhance, Metadata, Output, and Presets panels are displayed by default, because you may have to use use any combination of them to perform your encoding. You can still choose use a Silverlight template by opening the Templates panel, but this project does not provide the tools for full flexibility in choosing a template and previewing your content in several templates. If you want that level of flexibility, you should use the Silverlight Project.

In general, the workflow in the Transcoding Project mirrors that of a standard scenario of assembling, editing, and encoding your media, which consists of performing the tasks described in the following topics:

  1. Importing your media

  2. Editing your media

  3. Preparing your media for encoding

  4. About Silverlight templates

  5. Create encoded media
