Adding a Business Desk Application to a Site

Commerce Server includes a Business Desk application in each Solution Site. When you unpack a Solution Site, you unpack the Business Desk Permissions resource, set the database connection string, and unpack the Business Desk application, thus adding it to the site.

You may want to add a Business Desk application to a site in the following situations:

  • You customize a second Business Desk application offline, while the original application is in use. When finished with development, you can then add the customized Business Desk application to the site, thus replacing the existing application.
  • You have two Business Desk applications for your site: one customized Business Desk for your staging environment, and another customized Business Desk for your production environment. For example, in the production environment Business Desk, you may not want to include the Catalogs modules so that catalogs cannot be updated without first being tested.

Each Business Desk application includes objects that detect the Business Desk Permissions resource. By default, all the Business Desk applications in a site share the same set of permissions. To maintain a separate set permissions for each Business Desk application, you must create separate sites that have separate security databases and Business Desk Permissions resources.

To add a customized Business Desk application to a site

  1. Package the new Business Desk application into a .pup file. For instructions, see Packaging a Site.
  2. Unpack the new Business Desk application, adding it to the site. For instructions, see Adding an Application to a Site.
  3. Manually migrate customized ASP files from the original Business Desk application to the new Business Desk application, as needed.
  4. Use the Business Desk Permissions module to secure any additional features in the Business Desk user interface. For instructions, see Setting Business Desk Permissions for Windows Accounts.
  5. Contact all Business Desk users and tell them to install the new Business Desk client.
  6. Delete the original Business Desk application.

For instructions about adding new Business Desk modules to a Business Desk application, see Automating Module Installation.
