Remote Desktop Connection (Compact 7)

3/12/2014

Remote Desktop Connection for Windows Embedded Compact provides the following features and functionality:

  • Windows Embedded Compact Terminal Services Client (CETSC) and the Terminal Services client access license (TS CAL) maintenance tool in Control Panel. For more information about Terminal Services, see Remote Desktop Services at MSDN.
  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS), Network Level Authentication, and server authentication.
  • Network Load Balancing (NLB) and operation in any environment that enables network localization, automatic disconnect, and remote configuration.
  • Unicode compatibility, network bandwidth management, static virtual channels, and remote-control persistent static virtual channels.
  • Local drive redirection, file redirection, clipboard redirection, printer redirection, local audio playback, local port redirection, audio redirection, and Smart Card redirection.
  • High-color graphics, custom display resolutions, and monitor spanning.
Note   Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) versions 7.0 and 7.1 offer enhanced performance for 32 bits-per-pixel (BPP) sessions. This feature is available for connections to computers that run Windows 7 or servers that run Windows Server 2008 R2 but only if the client CPU also supports the Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) instruction set. If the client CPU does not support SSE2, the RDP 7.0 codecs are not used when the device establishes a session.
  • Microsoft RemoteFX is a new feature that is included in Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and in the Windows Embedded Compact 7 (Compact 7) implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 7.1. RemoteFX introduces a set of end-user experience enhancements for the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). These end-user enhancements deliver a rich desktop environment over a local area network (LAN) to a range of client devices that include rich clients, thin clients, and ultrathin clients. For more information, see the RemoteFX TechNet Wiki.

To add this feature to your OS, see Remote Desktop Connection Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables.

For reference information, see Remote Desktop Connection Reference.

The file redirection filter is implemented by using a file system driver. A sample driver is available at %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Rdp\Oak\Uit\filterfs. This sample implementation limits file redirection to external storage. You can customize this sample driver to filter the file system in a manner that suits your needs.

Source code for Remote Desktop Connection and the Windows Embedded Compact Terminal Services Client (CETSC) is available at %_WINCEROOT%\Public\RDP.

Source code for the Terminal Services Client Access License (TS CAL) Maintenance Tool is available at %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Rdp\Oak\Uit\licinfo. If the TSCAL tool meets your needs for CAL maintenance, you can use it as it is.
