Handheld Design Template (Compact 7)

3/12/2014

In Windows Embedded Compact, you can use the Handheld design template to create an OS for a portable device that connects to the Internet and supports either a mouse, a stylus, or finger input for users to interact with the UI.

By default, this design template provides the basic functionality for a portable Internet device with an optional touch-screen UI for a 640 × 480 or larger display.

The following list shows examples of portable Internet devices:

  • Handheld terminals
  • Wireless Internet consumer devices
  • Thin clients

The design template provides configurable features such as:

  • Internet Explorer Embedded
  • ActiveSync, which includes AirSync, and Messaging API (MAPI)
  • Dial-up Networking (RAS/PPP)
  • Remote Desktop Connection
  • Windows Embedded Compact Standard Shell
  • Wireless connectivity (802.11 or Bluetooth wireless technology)
  • Network user interface
  • Windows Sockets (Winsock)

For more information about these features, see Internet Explorer Embedded, ActiveSync, Dial-up Networking Reference, Remote Desktop Connection, Shell, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Network User Interface, and Windows Sockets.

When you use the Windows Embedded Compact OS Design Wizard in Platform Builder, select the Handheld design template in the Enterprise Device category to create an OS for a portable Internet device.

When you are finished with the Windows Embedded Compact OS Design Wizard you can add other catalog items to your OS design.
