A unified communications application serves to facilitate real-time communications between users. Knowledge of the user presence enables a smooth user experience. As such, the application typically participates in publishing or discovering presence data such as the availability and state of a user or device, a user's contact information, the calendar data, and other information describing if, when, and how a user can be contacted.

In the unified communications system based on Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, the presence data is represented by category instances. Category is a new data model capable of supporting more flexible control of data publication and subscription and providing a set of enhanced features in publishing and accessing the presence. The category-based presence data is called enhanced presence data in contrast with the simple presence data model used in the prior versions of the Microsoft unified communications system.

The Unified Communications Enhanced Presence Schemas for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 define the data types used to describe the enhanced presence. This document provides the technical reference to the enhanced presence data types. It is intended for application developers who are interested in publishing or subscribing to enhanced presence within the Microsoft unified communications application framework while maintaining the interoperability with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. The accompanying XML Schema Definition (XSD) files are provided as an application development tool and must not be redistributed.
