How to: Change and Filter the Data Columns in Microsoft Test Manager

You might want to change the columns of data that are displayed in a specific view for Microsoft Test Manager. For example, if you want to view the test cases in a test suite by state to display all the test cases that are still in a design state and must be reviewed, you can add the state field using the column chooser and then sort by state. If you just want to view only the test cases in a design state, you can add a filter for the column.

You can also rearrange the column order, change the column widths, and for some views, you can group by specific columns.

Requirements

  • Visual Studio Ultimate, Visual Studio Premium, Visual Studio Test Professional

The following illustration shows you how to access the column chooser to add and remove fields as you require. This is available throughout all the views that are displayed as a grid in Microsoft Test Manager.

To change the data columns displayed in a view and add a filter to a column

  1. Open Microsoft Test Manager.

    Note

To display the Microsoft Test Manager window, choose Start, and then choose All Programs. Point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 and then choose Microsoft Test Manager.

  2. To change the state of a test plan, choose the down-arrow on the center group selector and choose Testing Center.

  3. In the center group menu bar, choose Plan.

  4. To display the contents for your test plan, choose Contents.

  5. To add columns to the test cases view, right-click in the view displaying the test cases, and then select the extra column that you want to display. Choose to close the column chooser.

The column that you added is now displayed as the last column in the grid.

    Note

To select multiple columns, press Ctrl and then select all the columns that you want to display.

  6. (Optional) To remove columns from a view that you do not want to see, right-click on the column headers in the view displaying the test cases, and then select the column that you want to remove.

The check mark for that column is removed.

  7. (Optional) To move a column to another position in the grid, choose the column header and drag it to the new position.

    Note

These changes are saved and used whenever you start Microsoft Test Manager.

  8. (Optional) To add a filter to a column, rest your mouse pointer over the column that you want to filter until a second drop-down arrow appears. This arrow appears next to the drop-down arrow to sort the values in the column. Then choose this drop-down arrow in the column header, and then select the values for the field that you want to display in the view.
