Getting Started with the Best Practices Analyzer Tool

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server performs the following diagnostic functions on a deployment of Team Foundation:

  • Collects information about system hardware, installed software, configuration, and operational status from the servers that you scan.

  • Analyzes the information that it collects against known requirements for the version of Team Foundation Server that is deployed.

  • Flags each information item as an error, a warning, information, or a best practice based on the analysis performed.

  • Displays several reports that highlight critical errors, in addition to all the information that the tool collects to support troubleshooting and maintenance operations.

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server collects data from SQL Server, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes, the registry, the metabase for Internet Information Services (IIS), Event Monitor, and other parts of the deployment. The tool then analyzes the data to determine whether required system settings are configured and best practices are being followed.

Note

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server does not modify any system settings.
