The SQL Server instance is named

Visual Studio 2008

The information in this article applies to:

  • Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server

  • SQL Server 2005

  • Data-tier server

  • Health check

  • Preinstall check

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server queries the SQL Server master database for the instancename server property.

An error appears if the tool determines that the instancename key is longer than 0. You cannot install Team Foundation Server if you used a named instance to install the SQL Server databases.

This rule applies to deployments of Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server only. (Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server supports named instances of SQL Server.)

To resolve this issue, you must uninstall and reinstall SQL Server.

To uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2005

  1. Uninstall the named instance of SQL Server 2005.

For more information, see "How to uninstall an instance of SQL Server 2005 manually" on the Microsoft Web site.

  2. Reinstall SQL Server 2005. Make sure that you click Default instance on the Instance Name page.

For more information, see "How to: Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for Team Foundation Server" in the Team Foundation Installation Guide for Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server. You can download the most recent version of this guide from the Microsoft Download Center.
