Computer cannot be found

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server performs several queries that require access to the computers that you specified to be scanned.

A warning appears if a query cannot access a computer that you specified to be scanned. The warning indicates the computer where the query failed and one of the following conditions:

  • Application-tier computer is not found

  • Application-tier/data-tier computer is not found

  • Application-tier Team Foundation Server is not found

  • Data-tier computer is not found

If the tool cannot access one or more computers that you specified, it cannot process the rules that are associated with that computer. The warnings that are listed in this topic indicate that the rules that are associated with the computer that you specified have not been processed.

Note

For a preinstall check, if the application-tier server cannot be found, the scan is not run on the data-tier server either.

The main causes for not finding a computer are as follows:

  • The name of the computer that you specified is incorrect.

  • The URL or port that you specified for the application-tier server is incorrect.

  • A network issue is preventing the tool from contacting the computer.

To resolve an issue where access to a computer is not available:

  • Verify that the name of the computer that you specified is correct.

  • Verify that you specified and formatted the URL or port correctly.

  • Verify that there are no network connectivity problems between the computer from which you are running the scan and the computer that you want to scan. Ping the computer that the error specifies to determine whether the computer is available.

  • Run the scan from the computer that the error specifies.
