1.3 Overview

Journal record messages are MIME messages produced by the server that capture information about other (non-journal record) messages sent through the server. These non-journal record messages are referred to as original messages. Metadata about the original message is contained in the Envelope-Part structure (section 2.1) in the Journal Record Message File Format. This format allows an administrator, for example, to log and review the recipient of every outgoing message.
