Due to Microsoft Exchange Server-specific implementation details, the remote operations (ROPs) are at the heart of the Exchange message store. Almost all other protocols are constructed around the ROPs and are dependent on it. If the ROPs become unavailable, then other protocols can experience service outages related to accessing storage items.
