Marketing lists and dynamic segmentation

Applies To: Dynamics Marketing

Use the marketing database in Microsoft Dynamics Marketing to determine which campaigns and programs are most profitable and learn more about your customers, clients, and prospects. Using Dynamics Marketing, you can perform various data analysis and segmentation tasks including getting clean, updated, and accurate information about customers and prospects; querying, analyzing, and defining targeted customer segments; generating mailing lists for email campaign execution; and building and nurturing qualified prospect lists that you can reuse.

Dynamics Marketing offers static marketing lists and dynamic queries in order to select groups of contacts. In static marketing lists contacts must be manually managed. Static marketing lists can also be generated or filled from a Dynamics Marketing query.

For dynamic queries, you can specify a set of criteria which are used to identify the contacts at the point in time when the query is used. You can view sets of contacts available as part of query results on screen, add them to an existing/new static list, send an email message to them, use them in an automated campaign, or export for them for third-party application. Since Dynamics Marketing treats lists and queries identically, you can use them interchangeably when creating mailing lists, sending email messages, or managing campaigns. You can specify and prioritize lists for an email marketing message or perform segmentation using queries. Marketing lists can also be used as subscription lists that participants can see on landing pages and in subscription centers. Another typical use is suppression lists for email marketing campaigns.

Microsoft.Dynamics.Marketing.SDK.Messages.MarketingList Namespace provides classes to help you create, retrieve, update, or delete marketing lists, and add/remove single or multiple contacts to/from a marketing list or lists by emails or IDs. Dynamics Marketing API also helps you categorize your list or contacts with similar needs, wants, or demand characteristics in clearly identifiable groups or segments to design a marketing mix that precisely matches the expectations of customers in the targeted segments. To get a demonstration of how to interact with marketing lists using Dynamics Marketing APIs, see Sample: Work with marketing lists.
