Leaving a Farm

Applies To: Service Bus for Windows Server 1.1

The Service Bus Configuration Wizard provides a way for you to remove a server from a farm.

Use the following procedure to leave a farm.

  1. When the Service Bus Configuration Wizard detects that the current server belongs to a farm, it offers you the option to leave the farm. The Leave Farm page appears.

  2. Click Leave Farm to display a summary page in which you can approve the change. The wizard displays the Configuration progress screen, which shows the progress of the operations and the details of the current operation. If errors occur during installation, you can click the View log link to see which installation step caused the error. After leaving the farm, you can safely uninstall the Service Bus from your server.

Tip

The farm management database instance and name are stored in the registry. They are removed and services are cleaned up from the computer even if the connection to the SQL Server instance is lost. To clean up the entry from SQL Server, you can use the Remove-SBHost cmdlet, as described in Configuration using PowerShell1.

Tip

Leaving a farm does not delete any information stored in Service Bus databases. In fact, you can rejoin the same farm by running the Service Bus Configuration Wizard again.

Removing a server from a farm is essential when you need to rename a server or reduce a farm size. To rename a server that belongs to a farm, do the following:

  1. Remove the server from the farm.

  2. Rename the server.

  3. Add the server back to the farm, as described in Joining an Existing Farm2.
