Deciding Which Delegation Model to Use

There are two models for using Delegated Authentication with the Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit. Each model offers the same functionality to the user, but has different storage requirements for the application provider.

  • Using Stored Consent Tokens for Delegated Authentication: Recommended for applications that implement a site-specific authentication policy and for applications that offer functionality to users who are not signed in to Windows Live Messenger. Users are not required to sign in to Windows Live each time the application uses the Delegated Authentication functionality.
  • Using Application Verifier Tokens for Delegated Authentication: Recommended for applications that do not implement a site-specific authentication policy. Users will be prompted to sign in to Windows Live each time the application uses the Delegated Authentication functionality.
