How to: Run Setup

You can use Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Setup to install software, create a customized list of components to install, or configure individual components. This topic describes a default software install with Setup, without any customization or configuration, and notes the opportunities available for more advanced uses of Setup.

NoteNote

You must be an administrator on the computer where you run Setup.

NoteNote

Before installing Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1 on a computer, you must uninstall any prior version of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. You cannot install Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1 on top of any prior version.

Running Setup to Install an Installation Option

The simplest use of Setup is to install one of the predefined Installation Options.

To run Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Setup

  1. Decide which of the Installation Options you want to install.

  2. Verify that the target computer meets the hardware and software requirements for the selected Installation Option. For more information, see Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Requirements.

  3. Insert the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 DVD.

The Startup screen presents a set of options in sections entitled Prepare, Install, and Join the Community.

  4. Under Install, click Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

  5. Click Next to move past the Welcome screen.

  6. To indicate acceptance of the license terms, click I accept.

  7. Click either Install Demo or Choose an installation option.

If you click Install Demo, Setup begins copying software and runs to completion without further input from you. For more information, see Demo Install Option. If you click Choose an installation option, you process to the Choose an installation option pane.

  8. On the Choose an installation option pane, click the larger text defining the name of an installation option to choose that option (for example, Client, Server, or Database Components).

Optionally, you can click the word Customize, in smaller text, to modify the list of components before installing. For more information, see How to: Choose Components to Install.

To install Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 software to a location other than the default location (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60), click Customize and then click Destination folder on the Customize the installation pane.

  9. On the Specify Parameters page, you can choose to pre-configure any component shown with a black underscore.

Each such component has an icon indicating one of three possible statuses. For more information about the meaning of these icons, refer to the information displayed at the bottom of the screen in Setup.

For information about how to configure components, see How to: Preconfigure Components.

  10. After you configure components (or if you do not choose to configure components just now), click Install to begin copying software.

  11. When Setup is finished, click Close to exit Setup.

Canceling Setup

Setup does not provide a Cancel button on all panes, but you can cancel an installation from any pane by clicking the X in the upper-right corner. All Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 components are removed from the computer. The only software that Setup installs but cannot remove are:

  • Database files such as the Demo database.

  • Prerequisites for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 components that Setup can install, such as the .NET Framework.
