How to: Activate the License File

After an administrator or a Microsoft Certified Partner performs the initial install of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, the next step is to activate the license file that is supplied by Microsoft. You must upload the license file before you deploy software to end users.

NoteNote

Activating the license file is something you do once for each database installation, not once for each client installation.

Initially, Microsoft Dynamics NAV uses CRONUS.flf, which is the demonstration license file. All license files that are not demonstration license files have the name FIN.flf. The demonstration license file has been given a different name so that it cannot be mistakenly overwritten.

The steps for activating the license vary according to which database server you are using:

  • For SQL Server, you upload the license file to SQL Server from the Classic client.

  • For Classic Database Server, you copy the license file to the Database Server.

Uploading the License File to SQL Server

By default, the following procedure uploads the license for all Microsoft Dynamics NAV databases on the SQL Server instance. To upload a license for a specific database, in the Classic client, on the File menu, point to Database, and then click Alter. In the Alter Database window, click Integration, and then select Save license in database. For more information, click the Help button in the Alter Database window.

NoteNote

To save the license file in the database, you must have the Per Database License granule (2020) in your license.

To upload your license file

  1. Open the Classic client.

Click Start, and then click Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Classic with Microsoft SQL Server. If you have not already installed the Classic client, then see How to: Install Classic Client for Administrative Tasks.

    NoteNote

On a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Vista with User Access Control enabled, you must start the Classic client with administrator privileges. To do this, right-click the Classic client in the Start menu, and then click Run as administrator.

  2. On the Tools menu, click License Information.

  3. In the License Information window, click Upload.

    NoteNote

If you do not have a database connection, then the Upload button is not available.

  4. In the Upload License File window, browse to the folder where your Microsoft Dynamics NAV license file is located.

  5. Select the license file, and then click Open to upload it to the SQL Server database.

Copying the License File to Classic Database Server

This procedure assumes that you are using a database on the Database Server instead of running in single-user mode.

To copy your license file to the Classic Database Server

  1. Locate and copy your license file.

  2. On the computer where you have installed the Classic Database Server, navigate to the directory where the Classic Database Server executable, Server.exe, is located.

The default location is Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\Database Server.

  3. Paste the license file in the server directory.

  4. Rename the file fin.flf if you have not already done so.

  5. Restart the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Server service.
