Deploying Applications in New Server Topologies

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports various server roles including:

  • Standard Edition

  • Enterprise Edition

  • Access Edge

  • Web Conferencing Edge

  • Audio/Visual Conferencing Edge

  • Communicator Web Access

  • Enterprise pool Front End

  • Enterprise Edition Back-End Database

  • Archiving service

  • Director

  • Monitoring service

Third-party applications can be deployed on only the Access Edge Server, Director, Enterprise Pool Front-End, and Office Communications Server Standard Edition servers. Understanding how each new server role functions is essential to both application design and deployment.
