How to: Update a Business Intelligence Project

Dynamics AX 2009

In Microsoft Dynamics AX, you can incrementally update the Data Source View (DSV), Unified Dimensional Model (UDM), and language metadata translations for an existing Business Intelligence (BI) project. This topic describes how to use the Update a Business Intelligence project form to update BI projects by using Microsoft Dynamics AX.

You can update a BI project without overwriting the core dimensional model object definitions, such as dimensions, dimension attributes, measure groups, measures, and cubes. For example, you can update a BI project to add new language translations for tables and fields that are referenced by a deployed cube. You can also add new attributes and measures to a perspective and then update a deployed cube by using the Update a Business Intelligence project form.

To update a Business Intelligence project

  1. On the Microsoft Dynamics AX menu, point to Tools, point to Business Intelligence (BI) tools, and then click Update BI project. The Update a Business Intelligence project form displays.

  2. Click the General tab to display options to select a BI project to update. The following table describes the fields that you can set.

    Field

    Description

    Project file

Specifies the BI project file to update.

    Enable logging

Determines whether data is recorded about the BI project update process. Logging is recommended for a customized DSV to identify information that must be updated manually.

    Log file

Specifies the path and file name of the log file if Enable logging is selected.

    Open Updated Project

Opens the BI project in SQL Server Business Intelligence Server (BIDS) after the update.

    Select perspectives

    Specifies the cubes to update.

  3. Click the Time Dimensions tab to select the time dimensions to update. The following table describes the fields that you can set.

    NoteNote

You must set time dimension options.

    Field

    Description

    Update Time Dimensions

Determines whether to update time dimensions.

    Use the standard calendar

Determines whether to update time dimensions using the standard calendar.

    Use the fiscal calendar

Determines whether to update time dimensions using the fiscal calendar.

    Start date/End date

Determines calendar start and end dates for selected calendars. If you use both standard and fiscal calendars, the lesser of the two start dates and the greater of the two end dates are used so that all possible dates are available when populating BI data.

    Time periods

Determines which calendar time periods to include in the update. The selected time periods will be included as levels in the standard and fiscal calendar hierarchies.

    NoteNote
The time dimension is updated in Add only mode during project update. The Update a Business Intelligence project form does allow you to clear check boxes for existing hierarchy levels. However, after you update the project, the hierarchy for the time dimension will not reflect the changes you made to remove hierarchy levels. You must use BIDS to remove hierarchy levels in the time dimension.
  4. Click the Metadata Translations tab to select additional translation languages. The following table describes the fields that you can set.

    NoteNote

In this release of Microsoft Dynamics AX, when updating both cube elements and language metadata translations, only one half of the translations may be added to the project. To add the remaining translations, select only the Update Translations option and rerun the update.

    Field

    Description

    Update translations

Determines whether to update translations for the selected languages.

    Overwrite existing translations

Determines whether existing language translations are overwritten for the selected languages. Existing translations are overwritten when labels have changed.

    Update

Determines which languages to include in the update.

    NoteNote

Translations are not updated for manually defined UDM objects like calcualtions and KPIs. Update translations for manually defined objects in BIDS after you update the project. To do this, click the Translations tab of the cube that contains the manually defined objects and add missing translations.

  5. Click the Update Options tab to display options for the BI project to update. The following table describes the fields that you can set.

    Field

    Description

    Create Cubes

Determines whether to create new cubes during the update process.

    Update Cubes

Determines whether to update existing cubes during the update process.

    Create Dimensions

Determines whether to create new dimensions during the update process.

    Update Dimensions

Determines whether to update existing dimensions during the update process.

    Update Measure Groups

Determines whether to update measure groups during the update process.

    Update Dimension Usage

Determines whether to update dimension usage information during the update process.

    Update Hierarchies

Determines whether to update hierarchies during the update process.

    After Update Script

Specifies the path and file name of the script to run after the BI project is updated.

  6. Click OK to begin the BI project update. After processing, the BI Update Project window displays.

  7. Click Yes to apply changes or click No to cancel the update.

After you update the BI project, deploy it. For more information, see How to: Deploy Cubes in a Business Intelligence Project.
